The Republican approach to every problem seems to be the same: prohibit people and communities from deciding what’s best for themselves — the affordable housing crisis is no different (of course, no mention of not advertising Montana, anymore)…

There are simply too many people in Montana now. Our environment and infrastructure is suffering because of too many people. So stop advertising the state, for starters. And if you want affordable housing then heavily tax the construction of large homes (which are also terrible for our environment) and large, density-decreasing lots. Provide tax incentives for people to live near downtowns (or just in towns, at least) and in places that are walkable and bikable. Since the cost of gasoline (and the commutes dependent on gasoline) and the cost of building large homes and low-density housing does not reflect their true cost to communities and our environment we cannot depend on the “free market” to make rational choices. A solution is not preventing communities and neighborhoods from deciding what is best for themselves.
